Othinslunda Hembygdsförening is a registered heritage society
in Tomelilla town,
member of the Scania Heritage Society,
the Heritage Society of Sweden, and of "Arbetsam" (union of
national heritage museums of labour). The society is located in the Heritage
Museum of Onslunda, a 19th century, traditional four-winged southern Swedish
farmstead. It is conveniently situated in the village of Onslunda, about
ten miles from the coast, in the very heart of beautiful ‘Österlen’
. Its central location makes it an ideal starting point for tours in the
surrounding countryside.
Besides traditional equipment, the farmstead houses a unique collection
of hand-made felicitation cards, shoe-maker's equipment and a collection
of hand-bound books from a local bookbinder's. In the buildings surrounding
the cobbled inner court, there is an authentic village shop and a classroom
from a local school, an exhibition of wagons, coaches and
farming equipment, and a truly unique BRUSH MUSEUM, the only one of its
kind in Sweden open to the public, and one of very few in Europe, which
has now been registered as a national heritage museum of labour.
The aim of the heritage society is to turn the museum into a living,
functioning unit, and to preserve ancient knowledge and traditions for
future generations.
Every year in june, midsummer is traditionally celebrated with singing,
music and dancing around the may-pole.
Since 2001, brush makers' courses are held in cooperation with Studieförbundet
Vuxenskolan (organisers of evening classes ) in Tomelilla. To begin
with, courses were held in rented class-rooms, now they are held in
the "brush-makers' facilities" of the actual museum, where
visitors can make their own brush to take home as a souvenir.
